On August 14th 2003 the North East of America suffered the largest recorded blackout in history, affecting nearly 50 million people. Nine months later the American press created the famous urban myth of the Blackout Baby Boom. Unfortunately this myth has since been proven untrue, which saddens me deeply.

Blackouts are undeniably the most romantic “catastrophe” within the scope of human errors.
The lights go out, so flames flicker to life as candles are lit. Computers turn off, cutting out your iTunes, so you dust off your acoustic guitar or ukelele.

And bored of their own silent homes, lone stags and does gravitate to the streets, where the bin-fires poor illumination obscures everyone’s imperfections.

So the next time some blundering electronics engineer trips on a cable at the power plan, do not get out the jigsaws, do not rummage for a torch and that book you’ve been meaning to read for years.

Go outside, and create an urban myth with some merit to it!
